Brand activations

A reason to come closer. An experience to remember.

An activation turns a brand idea into an experience people can take part in. At Mariona Agency we develop the concept, design and production of activations in retail spaces, at events and at other touchpoints. We work from Barcelona so the interaction is easy to understand, means something to the audience and expresses something specific about the brand.

Taking part needs a reason

Attention isn’t won just by taking up space. People come closer when they understand what is happening and find a reason to give it their time. They might want to try a product, discover something, get a question answered or share an experience.

We define the activation from that relationship between what interests the audience and what the brand wants to achieve. We design a simple mechanic and assess how it works in the real setting: participation times, flow of people, staff attention and continuity of communication. The creative idea has to be something people can live, not just something explained in a proposal.

How we think about brand activations

Taking up space is not the same as sparking interest.

We design a reason to come closer and a simple way to take part.

Those who take part live the brand and leave with an experience to remember.

Animation: people walk straight past a brand space; a clear proposition invites some of them to come closer and take part in three steps, and each one goes on their way, carrying the experience with them in orange.

Clear Flow and Human First

Clear Flow

A good activation is clear at a glance: what is happening here and what you can do. We design simple mechanics, with realistic participation times and a team that knows how to guide without interrupting.

Human First

People come closer when the idea interests them, not when the brand raises its voice. We start from what the audience wants to try, discover or share, and give them a reason to spend their time with the brand.

The parts of an activation

  1. Concept and mechanic

We establish what the brand is offering and how the audience takes part. The activation needs a clear sequence and a recognisable link to the product, the message or the occasion.

  2. Space and physical elements

We design the touchpoint and the materials it needs. We consider visibility, access and how it sits within its surroundings, so the brand’s presence makes the experience easier.

  3. Content and communication

We prepare messages, instructions and supporting pieces. If the activation continues online, we define how the two moments connect without adding unnecessary steps for the participant.

  4. Production and operation

We coordinate the resources in scope: installation, materials, front-of-house staff and timings. Venue conditions and any permits required are built into the planning.

Thinking about what happens afterwards, too

An activation can leave behind content, insight or a chance to build a relationship. We agree what is worth observing and how to capture it, depending on the project: participation, the questions people ask most, product use or the response to the idea. When personal data is involved, the mechanic and the way the data is handled are defined with the client before the activation goes live.

How we develop the experience

  1. Understand

We study the audience, the objective, the setting and the conditions for taking part.

  2. Clarify

We define the idea and the reason someone would want to come closer.

  3. Design

We develop the mechanic, the space, the materials and the operating plan.

  4. Refine

We test the flow, the instructions and the timings of the experience.

  5. Launch

We coordinate the activation and document the agreed follow-up points.

Questions about activations

How is an activation different from an event?

An activation centres on a specific interaction between the brand and the public. It can sit within an event or work on its own at a point of sale or in another space.

Does it have to involve technology?

Only if it improves the experience. A physical demonstration or a simple activity may be more suitable. The tool is chosen after defining how people will take part and under what conditions.

Can the activation be repeated in different places?

Yes, if it is designed with that in mind. Materials, installation and operation must allow it to adapt to different spaces, teams and running times.
